But...sometimes you don't have the money or time to invest in a subscription, so here are three magazines/newspapers that are totally free or going to be free and available on the Internet...

Wired Magazine - http://www.wired.com
This gem of a publication offers interesting news and articles on everything from computers to astronomy and tells the behind-the-scenes stories of the tech world. Even if you aren't a "geek" you are likely to find something you like. Everything that is in the print version is available free online.

The Wall Street Journal - http://online.wsj.com/public/us
Not free yet, but promises to be almost entirely free soon. Why almost? Because some advanced features (you day traders should take note) will be for-charge, but most articles and information will be free.

The New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/
For some items you do need to register...just register...not pay. The online edition of the NYT looks much like the actual paper, making it fun to read this daily paper.

The Detroit Free Press - http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage
The Freep is available totally online. In fact, the online edition might even be better than the print, with blogs written by reporters that provide rich detail and information that is often omitted from the articles in the paper edition.

The Detroit News - http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage
The News main page features a mix of national and city news, unlike it's counterpart (which focuses primarily on the City and State first). The News Online mimics the print edition in layout and front page articles, so you certainly won't feel like you're missing too much by not having the News in print.

Are Americans Unfaithful to Faith?

This week CNN features an article from Time Magazine that says more Americans are "switching faiths" at an alarming rate:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/02/25/religion.survey.ap/index.html

You don't need Microsoft Office to be effective...

If you travel a lot, need to work on a collaborative project, or are trying to live a "paper-free" life, then here are two websites for you!

Use these sites to create faux Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents...

http://docs.google.com - you can share documents with other people, track editting, and even save the documents to your desktop as the appropriate Microsoft file. Teenagers are being sued for downloading music, people are put in prison for recording movies in movie theatres and then selling them on DVD, libraries post warning signs that copying too much of anything is a copyright infringement.

In response, two credible websites (and more everyday) have been created to provide information that is openly available without fear of an FBI vist. Both feature text, audio, video, books, etc. The quality ranges from professional work to amateur writings, from the popular to the completely obscure.

http://www.archive.org/index.php - The Internet Archive is a fascinating site that is attempting to archive the World Wide Web but also features all sorts of data. In one day the library staff went from watching a Bryan Adams concert to reviewing a book from the 1800s about mollusks.

http://creativecommons.org/ - The Creative Commons. The world does not operate in black and white. The Creative Commons approaches copyright with an understanding of this. The levels of copyright vary on this site...you can just watch or listen, you can use for school, you can download and share, you can download then share then remix and repost...you get it. Better yet, here's their explaination:

Creative Commons defines the spectrum of possibilities between full copyright — all rights reserved — and the public domain — no rights reserved. Our licenses help you keep your copyright while inviting certain uses of your work — a “some rights reserved” copyright.

Find funny, unique, odd, and/or informational items on both sites. Your library staff was attending the Michigan Library Association Annual Conference last week. Instead of boring you with the details of the great class we took on cross-referencing books, we'll just dig into today's post:

WHEN SHOULD THE LIBRARIAN VISIT YOUR CLASS? The librarian will happily visit your classes at the beginning of semesters to say hi and to do a brief (15 minutes) class of interesting websites related to your specific class. We also recommend having us visit your class when it is time for your students to pick a research topic. We can help you and your students figure out a topic to do research on and emphasize topics that the library is particularly strong in (i.e. many books or journals on a specific topic). This helps insure that students are not lacking in available resources.

BRING YOUR CLASS TO THE LIBRARY... Two weeks or more prior to due dates. We can show students how to use databases and train them in finding appropriate resources.

DO THE LIBRARIANS A FAVOR... Bring us your class syllabus. Ask us how we can incorporate library skills training into your class. Your class goals are to provide your students with knowledge that will provide the groundwork for future education. Our library goals are to provide them with the skills to obtain additional knowledge when they are no longer at Orchard Lake Schools and must search on their own.

We enjoy helping your classes! Visit us...often! (Bonus incentive...we often have candy available for your snacking enjoyment.)

Michigan Museums - Visit Them For Free

Do you love the museums and area cultural events, but are less than thrilled with the prices? And FYI - the library has over 175 books dedicated to the topic of preaching and homiletics!

Catholic Homilies - http://www.homilies.com/
Audio and video of homilies as well as tips for specific types of homilies related to Holy Days and life events, such as funerals, weddings, etc.

ePriest - http://www.epriest.com/
ePriest features best practices of parishes around the United States and offers "Homily Packs" which provide thought provoking questions and comments on readings.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops - http://www.usccb.org/nab/index.shtml
Weekly readings available at the click of a button - sponsored in part by the Diocese of Metuchen (New Jersey).

So much more to tell you about...Part II will focus on public speaking skills! Part III - the very best books and e-books on homilies.

Visit us on Flickr

Karen Majeski, our rare books specialist, has been scanning rare and antique prayer cards and pictures. We get lost. Frequently. On the road, in the stacks, just trying to walk across campus. All right, it's not quite that bad, but it's definitely not GOOD. So for a brief moment, let's talk about online maps and tools.

It's a good idea to compare directions between two sites. If you need a map to pass out for an event, some online tools will provide better images than others.

Want a fun map? A unique map? A map for travel or a map that will show you a unique topic...like wineries in California or libraries in England? You have to check out http://www.wayfaring.com Just try it...it's a fun twist on online mapping.

Now for the usual suspects...

http://maps.google.com - Google Maps
Yes, you know this one. The people who brought you satellite imagery plus maps...if you want to see what the roof of your house looks like, this is the site for you. Remember, sometimes the satellite data is months or years behind so the image might not look quite right. This is true of all the sites listed.

http://maps.ask.com/maps - Ask Maps
Ask is the little Search Engine that could. They are slowly and steadily becoming a competitor in all sorts of neat map technology. Try them out - unique feature - WALKING directions!

http://maps.yahoo.com - Yahoo! Maps
Every mapping website has a neat trick. At Yahoo! you can click a box and see current traffic patterns and accidents on major expressways.

http://www.mapblast.com - Microsoft's twist on mapping. Helps you keep track of locations you've looked up in the past.

http://www.mapquest.com/ - MapQuest excels at providing international directions. If you're driving in Europe you'll want to check this out.

Internet Safety

In case you missed it, the Internet Safety class held this last Wednesday was quite fun. Though curling up with your computer is not quite like curling up with a good book, it can help your student with research. Students who struggle with reading comprehension will find E-books available in Audio format to be helpful. ESL students will also benefit from reading along with audio books. Also, the ability to access a book via the Internet if you are unable to make it to the library is very handy.

E-Books allow a viewer to see the book exactly as it exists in the "physical" world. Page numbers, colors, cover art...it is all there.

Here are some links to get you started:

Bookshare.org - http://www.bookshare.org/web/Welcome.html
Bookshare has many large print titles and text-to-audio books available. It's easy to use a search engine and use the first webpages that come up...but that's sort of like trying to get dressed without the lights on. You might grab a bunch of stuff and not see what it really is. Next thing you know, you're wearing plaid with stripes...or getting low grades. Yikes!

Let's get some definitions out of the way first:
PATHFINDER - A listing of websites, books, journals, or magazine articles that provide insight and a good start on knowledge pertaining to a particular topic.
JOURNALS - Academic work that is peer-reviewed and/or not supported through commercial sponsorship.
MAGAZINES - Non-academic reading usually supported through commercial means.

So let's look at some websites...

http://www.mel.org/ - The Michigan Electronic Library
This site, sponsored by the state of Michigan, allows those with a Michigan Drivers License or library card to use pathfinders and databases.

http://www.ipl.org/ - The Internet Public Library
Great homework help in the TeenSpace section. Superior pathfinders that will get you started on any number of topics. Developed by librarians, kept up to date by librarians.

http://www.bjpinchbeck.com/ - BJ Pinchbeck
What started as a weekend hobby for BJ and his Dad ended up being a website that is amazing.

http://ocw.mit.edu/index.html - OpenCourseWare at MIT
Take classes, at MIT, for FREE. Or simply use the course information as a jumping off point for research.

http://www.loc.gov/index.html - The Library of Congress Homepage
If it doesn't help you with homework, it will atleast fascinate you interesting content.

http://www.nasa.gov/ - The NASA Homepage
They put people in space...they won't steer you wrong on homework.

Not All Search Tools Are Equal...

http://www.noodletools.com/debbie/literacies/information/5locate/adviceengine.html
Use this link to Noodle Tools to give you information on the types of Search Engines out there...
